Why Madrid?
I wanted to sign up to a spring marathon so that I could train alongside running club friends gearing up to London a week before, and being the second time of running here, it would give me a minimum goal, and an excuse to visit friends now living in the city. Madrid was the first marathon I ever did in 2014 before I ‘became a runner’. I was talked into signing up on a night out with friends, and thought it would be a good excuse for a weekend away and explore the city outside of work, before a busy summer with the Football World Cup in Brazil. Of course once I signed up and a few people suggested I needn’t follow through with it, or might not end up running, I had even more determination to complete it. I eventually succumbed to running as a sport a few years later when I was newly self-employed, broke and in need of community. 8 years and 8 marathons later, I’ve finally admitted I am indeed a runner, but always know that I could do a lot better if I prepared more.
RUNNING FOR COVER
There’s 3 reasons I started and continue to run. The friends - the ones that got me into it in the first place and all the ones I’ve met along the way. The culture - let’s face it, it’s the cheapest way to get from a to b and there’s a whole bunch of sights to see along the way. And the hospitality - there’s no doubt you feel better about sweating off the beer or wine you’re just about to consume (and I can consume a lot of both), and there’s nothing quite like the welcome you get running down the finishing straight of any race.

In 2014 we ended up enjoying hospitality at the Bernabeu the night before the race thanks to being a pretty big client of Real Madrid at the time. Let’s see if they’ll sponsor little old me as CAPE this year ;)

Why Long Beach?
The biggest selling point of Super League Triathlon for me when I started working with them back in 2021 were the international destinations, and the relays. Super Legaue poised themselves as the ‘Future of Triathlon’, and I saw the corporate relay as the ‘Future of Corporate Hospitality’. Gone were the days of getting people drunk for a living (though I still liked doing that too…), or where a 15-minute guest speaker appearance was enough to sell an event. I remembered Carlos Moya had previously declined our request to be a speaker because he had wanted 3 times the budget, but to play tennis with our guests instead. And honestly, I liked the idea!
THE POWER OF 3
I got into running because I was suddenly self-employed and living and working on my own. And for the best part, in the wonderful world of remote work, I still do. While running provides me the most consistency and easiest to pick up while I’m travelling, not all my friends want to run. So what if there was way to combine 3 of the most accessible individual sports into a relay. To connect solo travellers with locals through sport. To enjoy with friends or make new connections in a cool destination. Let’s tri!

Along the sandy coastline of California, Long Beach provides an accessible, warm and humble location for a triathlon, which let’s face it, might seem a bit intimidating at first glance. But for this, you won’t need a $5000 bike, or even a $500 wetsuit. Just be game for meeting people over a short, fun relay, followed by a local brew ot 2 two, and enjoy some of California’s finest wine.

Why We’re Going
Meetings Africa provides a platform for exhibitors to showcase their offerings to International and local buyers, African associations and corporate planners. It is the most formidable platform on the continent to meet face-to-face with suppliers and be part of Africa’s growth.
Cape Style
It was while I was driving back from the Nedbank Golf Challenge in Rustenburg for a flight from Johannesburg to Cape Town, when CAPE first popped into my head as a possiblity as a name for a new company. My family all thought it was just a whim off the back of my most recent trip but by the time I landed in Cape Leuwin a few weeks later to decide what to do with the rest of my life, it was all but decided and the rest is…. well still a work in progress to be honest.

With a marathon to train for I’m hoping to fly out a few days early to see downtown Soweto from a new perspective and and take part in the Township Marathon. Then we will plan to continue on to Cape Town after the exhibition to meet with suppliers and prospects in the Mother City. I cannot wait to return and learn the latest news and opportunities for events and businesses, and help bring new groups to Africa and CAPE’s spiritual home.

Why We’re Going
I didn’t need much way of convincing to join my sister-in-law who’s been booked to photograph a wedding in Vegas later this year. I’ve been to the Vegas twice before - once with Laura before she moved stateside for a 1-night stopover, and once for IMEX with a trip I had to cut short so didn’t see much more than the conference hotel. Hopefully 3rd time will be the charm to see beyond the strip, take in the Grand Canyon and curate a bespoke itinerary for a long weekend.

The land of limitless possibility, what happens in Vegas only happens in Vegas. The Super Bowl, the F1, Burning Man, The Cape Crew on Tour. Let’s Go!
